Typically, a standard freestanding refrigerator falls within these dimensions:

  • Width: 24 to 48 inches

  • Height: 62 to 70 inches

  • Depth: 29 to 36 inches

Standard refrigerator sizes are readily available from numerous brands and manufacturers in the market. Similarly, builders and developers often plan for standard refrigerator dimensions when customized cabinetry or entryways are not chosen. This approach simplifies installation through various doorways in homes and minimizes the need for extensive remodeling to accommodate a broad range of refrigerator options.

These models are often panel-ready, allowing for custom cabinetry integration, and their spacious storage compartments provide ample room to store a wide range of foods, ingredients and beverages.

How to Measure a Refrigerator for Your Kitchen

As every home is unique, so is the type of refrigerator you can install in your home. Many upscale kitchens allow consumers to go beyond the standard sizes and choose refrigerators customized to their lifestyles. However, it is essential to measure your space and see what professional-style refrigerator sizes are right for you and your lifestyle.

Supplies & Tools:

  • Measuring Tape
  • Paper and pencil to write down measurements

1. Measure Entryways

First, measure the various entryways in your home to see what your space allows to be brought into your home. Standard homes will often be smaller than custom homes, so it's important to be aware of the available width of your entryways for installation before purchasing your new professional-style refrigerator.

The different points you should measure should include the entryways into your kitchen, your front door or exterior door and any other doorways that will be used when installing the appliance into your space.

2. Measure Cabinetry

It's also good to be aware of the space available for the professional-style refrigerator width within your cabinetry. If you already know the size of your old refrigerator, still make sure to measure the space again to ensure accurate dimensions for your new appliance. The standard size of a cabinet opening is usually 36 inches wide.

If you opt for customized cabinetry, there are endless possibilities and configurations you can choose from. This also includes getting a panel-ready unit that can accept custom-made panels to match your cabinetry.

3. Measure For Your New Refrigerator

Make sure to obtain specific dimensions for your new refrigerator and accurately measure your kitchen space for the refrigerator’s width, height and depth before purchasing.

To measure height, measure from the floor to the ceiling or bottom of any overhead cabinets.

Measure width by measuring the alcove or area between cabinets where the fridge will be placed.

For built-in or counter-depth refrigerators, measure depth by measuring from the back wall to the front edge of countertops or cabinets that the refrigerator will be placed in. Keep in mind that standard-depth refrigerators will extend past countertops and cabinets.

4. Consider Clearances and Ventilation Space

When measuring for your new refrigerator, make sure you also account for any clearances and ventilation needed around the appliance. Some refrigerator models require at least a ½ inch of space on all sides to ensure proper ventilation. This space is important to ensure the refrigerator is able to cool properly without overheating.

5. Create a Path for Refrigerator Delivery

Mapping out a route for your refrigerator is essential to a successful delivery and installation process. Measure any hallways or doorways the refrigerator will need to pass through when it arrives at your home to ensure it will be able to fit.

What Size Refrigerator Do You Need?

When deciding what size refrigerator to buy, consider your kitchen space, household size, food storage needs, style preferences and any refrigerator features that are important to you.

Professional-style refrigerator sizes will often be designed wider than the standard size, so make sure to double-check measurements to ensure the refrigerator will be able to fit through your entryways and doorways if you are not remodeling your space.
